Following the success of ‘Midnight in Persia’ earlier this year, Gozitan Luke Azzopardi is back with his Fall/Winter ’13 collection titled ‘Pierced: The Last Pharoah’. First runway show at the beautiful and appropriate Robert Sammut Hall too! Think Egyptian Revival but current and then add a Maltese flair to the equation. The prints are digitally manipulated iconic images and you know the drill… I want it all especially the overcoat. The Maltese aesthetic came across in the dress shapes, accessories and lace. Needless to say, Luke really understands a woman’s body and how prints and silhouettes play off each other. The show running order was really well thought out too – I love the strong opening black silk number and how Luke built the prints upon that with a couple of bold colours in between. But what I’m happy about the most is the work Luke is putting into shifting what locals think about fashion and the boundaries he’s pushing with his wondrous work at such a young age. An isolated Gozitan talent no more, Luke is a designer to be reckoned with. Photos by Charles Paul Azzopardi
