I have a confession to make. While I’m obviously a fan of the menswear collections, women’s fashion week is a much more fulfilling fashion experience for me. Why? Menswear, barring a handful of brands, is a rinse and repeat cycle of the same trends and silhouettes and it’s quite rare for a designer to push the boundaries. In womenswear on the other hand, there is more room for fun and that’s what fashion at its core is: FUN! I compiled a little list of my favourite shows from Milan Fashion Week and while they didn’t make the cut, the furs at Fendi and the super sharp Marni and Jil Sander collections were also close to heart. First up is…
1) …the latest offering from Mama Miuccia. Surprised? Next season Prada is all about mixing rich and poor, choosing the best of Prada from the past (tweeds, furs, sequins, metallics and leathers) in order to move forward. This archive search also dug up iconic model Kristen Owen. Fashion moment in itself right there.
2) VA-VA-VUNK! Donatella went to the streets and elevated punk with her signature Versace exhibitionism for Fall 2013. I mean why wear a biker jacket and jeans when you can wear a zebra mink coat and enough PVC to make the 80s scared?! A perfect coming together of style, music and attitude. Viva Donatella!
3) Leave it to Domenico and Stefano to end Milan Fashion Week with a bang. This time around, Sicily’s Cathedral of Monreale’s golden mosaics were the inspiration behind the Dolce & Gabbana collection. Gilded and embroidered glamour with a finish of Papal red. I bet Anna Dello Russo is one happy woman right now.
Which was your favourite?
